Ketamine therapy has shown a significant impact on mental health, bringing a safer and more reliable alternative to other current methods of dealing with depression. Ketamine-assisted therapy counts on the capacity of the substance to create mystical experiences, like classic psychedelics like LSD, Psilocybin, and DMT. Like other psychedelic experiences, the ketamine trip is not for everyone. Let’s talk about who is not a good candidate for ketamine therapy.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a substance approved in the US by the FDA as an anesthetic that nowadays is being used for its psychedelic properties. In learning who is not a good candidate for ketamine-assisted therapy we need to consider the dissociative effects of the ketamine experience. When consumed in high enough doses, the therapy participant may feel separated from their body and ordinary consciousness. This, added to the capacity of ketamine to trigger mystical journeys has brought the drug to the forefront of psychedelic research.
What are the benefits of ketamine Therapy?
Good candidates for ketamine therapy are people who suffer from depression, and anxiety and need a renewed outlook on life. Far from being simply an anesthetic, ketamine has shown great capacity to alleviate symptoms of several mental issues. Canada and the United States are springing with ketamine clinics for mental health issues.
- Depression;
- Anxiety;
- Addiction;
These are three common issues that ketamine is used to treat nowadays. But if you identify with one of these conditions and think that you may be a good candidate for ketamine therapy, keep reading to learn more about what ketamine-assisted therapy is.
What is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
Ketamine-assisted therapy can be found in basically two ways:
- Small doses throughout a long period;
- Bigger doses in fewer sessions;
A big dose is not needed to achieve significant results with ketamine. Some treatments entail having the participant consume small doses of ketamine in their daily life. During this time the participant works alongside a therapist or other mental health professional to maximize the benefits of the process.
Another approach to ketamine therapy is to conduct full psychedelic experiences in a proper environment face-to-face with the therapists while exploring higher doses of the substance. This method explores the disassociation and mystical aspects of the ketamine trip.
Why Not Everyone Is a Good Candidate?
Compared with other psychedelics, ketamine can be quite mild, especially in low doses. However, we should not underestimate the potency of this drug. Even in low doses, the ketamine experience is not for everyone, and not everyone is a good candidate for ketamine therapy.
The low doses of ketamine can open the minds of the participants and allow them to accept them how they are. However, ketamine can slightly change our perception of what is normal and what isn’t. Some patients who take small doses of ketamine throughout the day often complain that after they take a dose they start speaking and have trouble holding their tongue. In a therapeutic context, this is great, but in a social environment, it could represent an inconvenience.
What is the K-Hole?
K-hole is something that is common in higher doses of ketamine and is often linked to ego death caused by classic psychedelics like magic mushrooms and acid. However, the K-hole is much more physical and it feels a lot like how we imagine death to feel. The k-hole is a sensation that the participant is going out like a lightbulb that is struggling to keep a very pale light on until it goes out totally.
This sensation is just one classic experience reported in ketamine trip reports, but many other psychedelic experiences are particular to the ketamine journey and are known to create the feared bad trips.
